STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Doctors at Richmond University Medical Center call little Samyah Bailey a miracle baby.

The Mariners Harbor tot who lost an eye in a hail of gunfire, is improving and could be out of the hospital by the middle of next week, doctors said.
The girl, who turns two in December, remains in critical condition in Richmond University Medical Center after undergoing seven hours of surgery and is "not out of the woods," according to hospital senior vice president Richard Salhany.

In an incident that has drawn national attention, Samyah was shot Wednesday as she sat in her stroller in the crowded courtyard of the Arlington Terrace Apartments in Mariners Harbor.

Damark King, 19, was arrested for spraying the area with bullets from his 9 mm handgun. He has been charged first-degree assault, first degree reckless endangerment and two counts of criminal weapon possession.
Dr. Rene Chalom said that if the position of Samyah’s head had been "slightly different" at the time of the shooting, "we could have seen a tragically different outcome" with a "penetrating injury to the brain."
"I believe in my heart that there was some kind of miracle to this story," he said.
None of Samyah’s family members attended the press conference with doctors.
Family members cried for vengeance at King’s court appearance, shouting out that the punishment should be "an eye for an eye."
