Massive drug sweep in Staten Island's New Brighton section nets 31 suspects
Police arrested 31 people for narcotics distribution in the New Brighton neighborhood, said Peter N. Spencer, a spokesman for the district attorney’s office.
The arrests centered around a local business where much of the activity occurred, said an Advance source.
After neighborhood residents complained of drug dealing in their community, Assistant District Attorney Michelle Molfetta along with the NYPD’s Staten Island Narcotics Bureau launched an investigation in October last year, Spencer said.
"The focal point of these illicit sales was a six-block neighborhood bordered by Jersey Street, Benziger, Westervelt and Corson avenues," Spencer said. "The drugs were sold in various locations, including homes and outdoors."
In addition to electronic surveillance, undercover detectives made 167 buys of crack cocaine, heroin and marijuana in the eight-month-long investigation, Spencer said.
The top charges include felony drug sales and possession.

The police also arrested 16 others for misdemeanor marijuana sales.
The basic information came from a press conference held by Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, where he announced this arrest in conjunction with three other investigations that netted 140 individuals total.
"This has been a bad week for drug dealers and gang members in New York City," Kelly said.
The district attorney’s office declined to comment on further details of the case as the investigation is on going.
