West Brighton felon gets 15 years in home invasion

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A West Brighton felon who burglarized a Rosebank home two years ago and pistol-whipped a disabled resident was slammed himself by a judge — with a 15-year prison sentence.
Two months ago, a jury in state Supreme Court, St. George, convicted Tyshon Sanders, 22, of three counts of first-degree burglary and one count of second-degree assault stemming from the March 9, 2009, incident.
Authorities accused Sanders of being among a group of bandits who broke into a disabled man’s Clifton Avenue home through a ruse in which they asked for another person.
At least two of the crooks wore masks and carried guns, said prosecutors. After pushing open the door, three suspects dragged the homeowner into the kitchen, beating him with their fists and gun butts, prosecutors said.
The victim’s wife was doing laundry in the basement, and hearing the commotion, sneaked out and called 911 from a neighbor’s home.
A fourth suspect, acting as a lookout, saw her and signaled his three accomplices to leave, said prosecutors.
The foursome fled in a gold vehicle without stealing anything, police said. Cops did not have the getaway car’s license plate number, make or model.
But the suspects left behind an important clue: A black ski mask.
DNA found on the ski mask matched a sample of Sanders’ in a law-enforcement data base, said prosecutors. Sanders is on record with a felony drug-possession conviction in 2008, said a law enforcement source.
Sanders was arrested in October 2009 and charged with the home invasion. He did not identify his accomplices, who remain at large.
He was tried a year later, but a jury in state Supreme Court, St. George, could not reach a unanimous verdict and a mistrial was declared.
Prosecutors re-tried Sanders and a new panel convicted him in March, said a spokesman for District Attorney Daniel Donovan.
Justice Stephen Rooney sentenced Sanders on Friday.
His lawyer could not immediately be reached today for comment.
Assistant District Attorneys Kathleen DiGiovanni and Jennifer Cilia prosecuted the case.
