Man found dead in Port Richmond street was struck by city bus
The man, a Port Richmond resident whose name is being withheld by police pending family notification, was struck by an S57 bus at about 6:38 a.m., according to authorities.
Kevin Ortiz, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, said initial reports indicate the bus was making a left turn from Port Richmond Avenue onto Post Avenue when it hit the man.
"The bus operator was unaware that he struck a pedestrian, and continued on his route," Ortiz said.
Police actually recalled two S57 buses to the scene, Ortiz said. Neither bus showed any damage or indication that it had hit someone, but the rain may have washed away evidence of the impact, he said.
Ortiz did not make available the name of either bus driver this morning.
Eddie Caride, who works at an auto shop across the street, said he came to work after the police scene had unfolded.
"When I got here, the guy was laying on the ground," he said. "There was a sheet on him."
By 11 a.m., investigators had cleared the street corner completely, leaving behind a few rubber gloves and, in a waste basket, a bundle of white-and-blue police tape.
