STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A Stapleton man prevented his girlfriend from leaving her apartment during an early-morning fight Wednesday by barring the front door with a refrigerator and a large fish tank, police allege.

Police say Edwin Garcia, 21, of Harrison Avenue, visited his girlfriend, who also lives on Harrison, in her apartment, and the two got into an argument.

She told him to leave, and he refused, authorities said, punching her in the face and kicking the front door to crack the frame.

He then barred her from leaving by moving the refrigerator and fish tank, and hid all the phones in the house, authorities said.

Eventually, he fell asleep, and when he did, she found a phone and called 911, authorities said.

Police had to force the door, and when officers moved in to arrest him, Garcia twisted his body and flailed his arm to avoid being cuffed, authorities said.

Garcia is charged with second-degree criminal trespass, third-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal mischief, second-degree unlawful imprisonment and resisting arrest – all misdemeanors.
