Members of the NYPD and the city Medical Examiner's office check out a Dumpster off Slaight Street in Port Richmond where a dead body was found earlier today. The victim was identified as Anthony Illidge. Police have arrested Jahaad Chesson in connection with the slaying.

A Port Richmond man who went missing Jan. 27 was found stabbed to death earlier today behind a townhouse development about one-third of a mile from where he lived, police said.

The body of Anthony Illidge, 54, was discovered around 3:30 p.m. behind a fence at the rear of 17/31 Slaight St., just off Nicholas Avenue.

Illidge's body was located just to the right of a hole in a six-foot white slatted fence, which has three Dumpsters corralled in front of it.

Behind the fence is a wooded area running adjacent to the former North Shore Railway.

Illidge had suffered multiple stab wounds to the torso and was estimated to have been there a few days, said police.

Charged with the murder is ex-convict Jahaad Chesson, 23, whose mother lives in the same St. Joseph's Avenue residence as Illidge.

According to police sources, Chesson had been staying with his mother, Deborah Mitchell, 55, when he was caught by Illidge breaking into his apartment.

There was a physical confrontation and Illidge was stabbed repeatedly and then dumped behind the townhouse development, sources continued.

Chesson has also been charged with burglary, grand larceny, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of stolen property and tampering with physical evidence, police said.

Illidge's death is the borough's first homicide of 2010.

Members of the NYPD Crime Scene Unit donned plastic white suits and examined and photographed the area for several hours before the city medical examiner's office removed Illidge's body around 7 p.m.

Illidge was last known to be in his St. Joseph's Avenue home around noon on Jan. 27. His residence is across from Port Richmond High School, approximately four blocks away from the murder scene.

Also missing is his car, a tan 2003 Infiniti with the license plate DUS 5729.

This evening, a marked police cruiser sat vigil in a next-door driveway.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Chesson was previously busted in 2006 with three accomplices for mugging three victims on a Huguenot street and stealing an iPod, jewelry and belt buckle.

Chesson served just over two years in jail on two convictions of third-degree robbery, according to the state Department of Correctional Services database.

Illidge's murder is the borough's first killing in more than two and a half months.

The Island's last murder was the slaying of Kyre Henderson, found Nov. 18 shot to death in South Beach.

This would also be the longest stretch the Island has gone into a new year without a homicide since 2005, when the first murder of the year occurred on March 5.
