STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A Staten Islander was one of two New Yorkers
who pleaded not-guilty to drug trafficking charges in Northhampton,
Mass., according to The Daily Hampshire Gazette.
Mitchell E. Degroat, 27, an alleged member of the Bloods, and
Christopher Wright, 58, of Woodside, N.Y., were arraigned before a
Hampshire Superior Court judge on charges that they trafficked cocaine
and conspired to violate drug laws.
The two are being held at the Hampshire Jail and House of Correction -- Wright on $250,000 bail and Degroat on $150,000 bail.
The pair will have a pretrial hearing on Jan. 24.
Wright and Degroat were stopped on Interstate 91, near Exit 19, in
September after following another car too closely, police said. Wright
was on parole for a drug offense in Vermont, the paper reported.
A drug-sniffing dog detected 163 grams of powder cocaine in a backpack in the car's backseat, according to the report.
Degroat pleaded guilty to a felony charge of first-degree reckless
endangerment in connection with a 2005 gang-related shooting in New
Brighton, according to Advance records.
