6 charged in street brawl in Stapleton
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An early-morning brawl on a Stapleton street corner ended with a half dozen people arrested of a variety of charges Monday.
The fight started at the corner of Canal and Bay streets at about 4:20 a.m., police said.
Officers tried to break up two women who were duking it out, police said, when two men, Gustavo Ortega and Torres Diaz, both 23 and from Corson Avenue in Tompkinsville, assaulted two of the officers, punching them in the head and chest.
Another officer tried to arrest Anel Perez, 26, of Queens, and Brenda Gutierrez, 34, of Manhattan, after they attacked a man on the scene, only to come under attack by Pedro Martinez, 23, of the 100 block of Rhine Avenue in Concord, police said.
Reyes Eugenio, 24, of the 100 block of Van Buren Street in New Brighton, also landed a few kicks and punches to Ms. Perez and Ms. Gutierrez’s victim, and interfered with the officer trying to arrest the women, police said.
Ortega, Diaz and Martinez all face felony assault charges, while the remaining three face misdemeanor assault and other charges.
