Police ID girl shot in Stapleton

DOA.jpgPolice investigate the scene of the fatal shooting outside this deli on Gordon Street. Jenice Clark, a 17-year-old, died at the hospital several hours after the shooting.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --

Police early this morning responded to emergency calls at 207 Gordon St., Stapleton, and found a 17-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

Jenice Clark was transported to Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton, where she was pronounced dead several hours later.

Linda Strong, who lives at 204 Gordon St., said she heard three gunshots early in the morning, and eventually came out to see a girl who had been shot lying in the street in front of Island Deli, which sits at the corner of Gordon and Warren Streets.

Police kept the area in front of the market clear as detectives scoured the crime scene.

"She didn't hang out here normally," said Ms. Strong, who said she worked with Clark's legal guardian, Carol Anderson. "She went to school every day--she was supposed to graduate from New Dorp High School this year."

There were no arrests as of yet but the investigation continues. More details will be posted as they become available.
