18-year-old charged after chase through New Brighton

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A New Brighton teenager was arrested after he and three cohorts were interrupted allegedly perpetrating a home-invasion burglary and led police on a high-speed chase on the North Shore.
Derrick Felder, 18, of Jersey Street, was charged with first-degree burglary, a Class B violent felony which carries a sentence of up to 25 years in prison, according to William J. Smith, spokesman for District Attorney Daniel Donovan. Felder was set to be arraigned in Stapleton Criminal Court Friday afternoon. His accomplices remain at large.
Police said Felder was part of a gang that was burglarizing an occupied home at 122 Westervelt Ave. in New Brighton around 11 p.m. on Thursday night. One of the burglars threatened an occupant with a gun and demanded money, cops said.
It is not clear how many people were home at the time, but police said that the burglars had herded at least one victim into a bathroom.
Authorities said that when police arrived in response to a 911 call, they saw Felder and two others run from the home and jump into a silver Honda Accord, where another man was already waiting behind the wheel.
The car took off with police in pursuit, speeding through New Brighton neighborhoods for about 10 minutes. Police said the gang ditched the Honda in front of 50 Westervelt Ave., with Felder and the others getting out and fleeing through a backyard wooded area. An NYPD helicopter joined in the pursuit.
Police said that Felder made his way to 61 Jersey St., New Brighton, in the Richmond Terrace Houses complex, and was arrested on the seventh floor of the building. Police say Felder was positively identified by a burglary victim.
Trash apparently being thrown out of the apartment building’s windows initially hindered NYPD efforts to apprehend Felder. Officers were dispatched to the housing complex’s rooftops to quell the commotion.
Felder is also charged with two counts of second-degree burglary, first-degree attempted robbery, resisting arrest and third-degree criminal trespass.
