Staten Island outages down to 5,000 -- but power won't be fully restored until Thursday

The bad news: The juice won't be restored for all the remaining 5,115 households and businesses until Thursday at 11 p.m., according to Consolidated Edison's Storm Central web page.

Electricity was cut for nearly 41,000 customers Saturday when a deluge of rain and hurricane-force wind gusts pummeled the Island, leaving a complex trail of downed tree, power lines and debris in its wake.

With few Con Ed crews spotted on the Island Sunday, out-of-state reinforcements arrived Monday, cutting back the number of outages to about 15,000 in the morning to 8,506 around midnight to 5,115 at 6:30 a.m.

But while some will see power before then, the utility's estimated restoration time for everyone is Thursday at 11 p.m.

Con Ed will distribute dry ice at the Staten Island mall today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.. for people whose perishable food is in danger of spoiling.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg paid a visit here on Monday to survey the scope of the devastation and to encourage residents to report damage to 311 with an eye toward federal assistance.

Four separate legislators -- Sen. Charles Schumer, state Sen. Andrew Lanza, state Assemblywoman Janele Hyer-Spencer and Rep. Michael McMahon (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn) -- have asked the feds for a declaration of disaster, which would provide funds for the cleanup and bring help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
