The NYPD is looking for this man, Freddie Thompson, who embarrassed authorities when he escaped custody by posing as another defendant at Stapleton Criminal Court.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. ---  An ex-convict caught Tuesday following a manhunt in West Brighton escaped today from Stapleton Criminal Court by posing as another prisoner, police said.

Freddie Thompson, 35, pulled the fast switch at his arraignment by convincing court personnel that he was someone else, according to a law official familiar with the incident.

To complete the ruse, Thompson went before Judge Alan J. Meyer with his newfound identity, entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to time served, the law official continued.

He walked out an apparently free man at approximately 3:10 p.m., police said.

Thompson is approximately 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Arrest records indicate he has a tattoo of an executioner on his arm.

Thompson, of upstate Schenectady, was wanted in connection with three gunpoint robberies on Staten Island — two on Feb. 18 and Feb. 25 in which he demanded drugs and cash from his victim, and one on Feb. 26 in which he demanded cash only, police allege.

Thompson was nabbed Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. at a bus stop on the corner of Trantor Place and Walker Street in Elm Park.

He had earlier been spotted in the Walgreens at 1227 Forest Ave. but left before police arrived.

Thompson also was accused of violating a court order preventing him from contacting his ex-girlfriend and damaged an unspecified piece of her property.

Charges against him include criminal mischief, burglary, criminal contempt and criminal trespass.

Police had previously described Thompson as “armed and dangerous.”

Anyone with information about Thompson’s whereabouts is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS (8477).Tipsters can also visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com, or send information via text message, by texting 274637 (CRIMES) and entering TIP577.

All calls will be kept confidential, according to police officials.
