DWI arrests spike on Staten Island in 2011

NEW YORK -- Arrests for DWI on Staten Island increased 18.1 percent in 2011 over the previous year. Overall, drunken-driving arrests were down in New York City.
There were 607 DWI arrests on Staten Island through Dec. 25.
The New York Post, citing NYPD statistics, said that citywide, DWI arrests were down 13.4 percent from 2010.
The biggest drop, 19.8 percent, was recorded in Brooklyn.
In Manhattan, DWI arrests were down 16.2 percent over 2010. In the Bronx, the arrests declined 15.9 percent.
Queens, which had the most DWI arrests in 2010, saw a 10.2 percent decline in 2011 over the same period the year before.
The spike on Staten Island was attributed to increased efforts by patrol and highway police.
