Police arrest suspected car thief in Stapleton

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A suspected car thief who bolted when police appeared on the scene has been arrested after a search in Stapleton.

Police say the man was in a stolen car near the intersection of Targee and Broad streets. When they approached the vehicle the man fled through the back yards of residential Gordon Street. He was taken into custody in a house near the spot where the car was abandoned.
