Dr. Nicole Borges, 40, took a swing at the manager of the Kings Arms restaurant on Forest Avenue, then flashed what appeared to be a shield at him when informed the eatery would be closing in a few minutes at 1 a.m., said a law enforcement source.
"You don’t know who I am. I’m a detective. You don’t want to mess with me," Dr. Borges, an internist at Staten Island Physician Practice in Sunnyside, allegedly hissed at the manager. "I’m going to call Immigration and get you deported."
Sometime before the confrontation, Dr. Borges’ mother had been unhappy with her food and sent it back, said the source. The two women were dining together.
The doctor calmed down enough to pay her bill, but she apparently became enraged again on her way out, said the source. She kicked a glass door, cracking it, the source said. Damages exceeded $250, said court records.
Police arrested Dr. Borges about an hour later outside her home on the 200 block of Lafayette Avenue, New Brighton. Diner employees had written down her license plate number, said the source.
Dr. Borges was charged with misdemeanor counts of criminal impersonation and criminal mischief, said a spokesman for District Attorney Daniel Donovan. If convicted of either charge, she could be sentenced to up to a year in jail.
Dr. Borges declined comment when reached yesterday by telephone.
Dr. Wilfredo Velez, president of the medical staff at Staten Island Physician Practice, said Dr. Borges has been on staff about four years. He said a reporter’s call was his first notice of the alleged incident and he couldn’t comment on it or Dr. Borges.
The diner manager also declined comment on the episode, when reached by phone yesterday.
Jimmy Koutsovasilis, the diner owner was not present during the incident and said he couldn’t discuss it. He said the diner closes at various times — sometimes as early as midnight — depending on business.
Dr. Borges has been licensed to practice medicine in New York since February 2000, according to online records of the state Health Department. She has no disciplinary history.
