STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A Stapleton man and two buddies pummeled and stomped a man in South Beach, then drove off with his car on Tuesday, police allege.
The violent episode happened on Wentworth Avenue at about 10:45 p.m., after the victim, a delivery driver, was returning to his 2000 Nissan Maxima, authorities allege.
The victim was acquainted with one of his assailants, who approached the car and asked, "Do you know who I am?" then clocked the man in the back of the head with a glass bottle, authorities allege.
The victim collapsed to the ground, and that’s when one of the assailants, Andres Pinero, 19, of the 100 block of Gordon Street, started kicking him in the face, police allege.
All three got into the Nissan and drove off, police allege.
Cops caught up with the car not long after, at the corner of Virginia Avenue and Bay Street.
One of the men was standing outside the car by then, and the driver bailed out, sending the car into a parked vehicle, authorities said.
That left Pinero, who tried to run but couldn’t outpace the police, authorities said.
He’s charged with 16 separate felonies and misdemeanors, including first-degree robbery, second-degree assault and fourth-degree grand larceny, said William J. Smith, a spokesman for District Attorney Daniel Donovan.
Police are still investigating the identities and whereabouts of the other two suspects.
