Cops combed St. George after Naquan Thompson escaped custody and ran to the Railway station at the St. George Ferry Terminal on Jan. 6.STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Freedom was fleeting two months ago for a robbery suspect from Dongan Hills who was captured minutes after slipping his handcuffs and fleeing while being transported to court.
Naquan Thompson's prison stint, however, will last a tad longer.
Thompson, 22, of Dongan Hills, was sentenced today to 10 years behind bars.
Last month, Thompson pleaded guilty in state Supreme Court, St. George, to a felony count of escape stemming from the Jan. 6 incident, along with two counts of first-degree robbery and one count of stolen-property possession arising from the Dec. 13 armed stickup of a deli in his community.
He also pleaded guilty to second-degree assault for tossing a pit bull puppy at a cop on July 28. The defendant threw the dog at an officer who tried to arrest him after Thompson exited a stolen vehicle. The animal bit the cop on his forehead.
The sentence covers all three cases, said a spokesman for District Attorney Daniel Donovan.
Thompson's escape occurred as he was being transported from the 120 Precinct in St. George to Stapleton Criminal Court for a robbery arraignment. Thompson's handcuffs apparently were not tightened sufficiently and his skinny wrists allowed him to wriggle out of them, said police.
He ran toward the St. George Ferry Terminal where he broke his ankle in a leap down to Staten Island Railway property. Cops found him minutes later in an empty train after the power was cut to all Railway tracks.
The officer responsible for handcuffing Thompson was suspended without pay, police said.
In the armed heist, Thompson and a co-defendant, Jamel Green, 18, of West Brighton, swiped $1,200 and cigarettes from Cousins Deli at 1372 Richmond Rd., said prosecutors. Green was also charged with first-degree robbery. His court case is pending.
