Payback will cost New Brighton man his freedom
Joseph JonesBut Joseph Jones apparently wanted to extract his pound of flesh, too.
Jones, 24, and another man badly beat the motorist inside the victim’s New Dorp Beach home on March 19, 2010 and stole his video gaming system, said prosecutors.
Jones’ attempt at payback is going to cost him his freedom.
A jury in state Supreme Court, St. George, on Wednesday convicted him of first-degree burglary, setting up a potential 25-year prison sentence.
The beating occurred at the end of an unusual sequence of events.
It began when the 54-year-old victim collided at the intersection of Harvard and Prospect avenues in New Brighton with a car occupied by three female friends of Jones.
The suspect and Tavon McClain, 20, of Tompkinsville, arrived on the scene shortly thereafter and began negotiating with the victim over the price of the damages.
The man agreed to pay $400, but had just $60, said prosecutors.
They went to an ATM; however, the man could only get a portion of the remaining $340.
The victim then offered to lead Jones and his friends to his Titus Avenue home to get the rest of the cash.
Once there, the females went into the man’s residence, despite his repeated requests that they wait outside, said prosecutors.
The man got the remaining money, one young woman took it, and she and her two friends left the apartment.
Jones and McClain then entered. They pummeled the victim, breaking his jaw and nose and inflicting other injuries, said prosecutors.
McClain was arrested on April 9 and five weeks later on May 13, pleaded guilty in Stapleton Criminal Court to attempted second-degree robbery, according to online state court records. He was sentenced to six months in jail and five years’ probation.
Jones, who lives on the 200 block of Corson Avenue, was nabbed on May 27.
The defendant has a prior violent felony conviction and faces a minimum of 10 to a maximum of 25 years in prison when sentenced for the burglary conviction, said a spokesman for District Attorney Daniel Donovan.
The proceeding is set for April 6 before Justice Robert J. Collini.
Jones’ lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment.
Assistant District Attorneys Karen Varriale and Michele Molfetta are prosecuting the case.

Chris Brown exploded in rage behind the scenes at "Good Morning America" this morning ... smashing a window and storming out without a shirt ... sources tell TMZ ... and it was triggered by on-air questions about the Rihanna incident.
ABC sources tell TMZ ... Brown performed and was interviewed by Robin Roberts live from the Times Square studio when she began asking about the infamous incident.
Brown tried to redirect the questions to focus on his album -- but Roberts continued to ask about Brown's legal issues stemming from the Rihanna incident.

We're told Brown was out of control, and one source present tells us he smashed a window in his dressing room, and the glass shattered and some shards fell onto 43rd and Broadway.
We're told by the time security rushed the area, Brown had ripped off his shirt and left the building, blowing off another performance he was supposed to do for the ABC website.
And sources say ... on his way out of the building, Brown confronted a segment producer, got in his face and stared him down. People from the show got in between Chris and the producer to diffuse the situation.
Remember -- Brown is on probation for the felony beating and he's required to obey all laws.

Wyclef Shot & Hospitalized In Haiti
Someone please call 911. Just before Election Day, gunmen opened fire at the vehicle Wyclef Jean was in while passing through Delmas #65 in Port-au-Prince. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound to the hand and is in good condition.

R.I.P. Nate Dogg
According to the Press-Telegram, legendary crooner Nate Dogg passed away last night. He was 41. No word as to cause of death, but four years ago, Nate suffered two strokes. Last year, Warren G gave an update on his condition and said he was undergoing therapy.

I was not dropped from Ford Models, they closed their celebrity division and my contract was up. What people don’t understand is when you’re in a modeling agency and your contract is up but you still get jobs without them. It’s a good thing, so they don’t take 20-30% of your money. I walked fashion shows in Paris, London, New York even after my contract was up. I didn’t have to re-sign with them I was getting work without them and it’s easier to get my own money without paying them.

I never wanted to be famous it just happened to me. I literally was with someone that I loved very much and we were out people would say “Kanye I love you but can you snap a picture of me and Amber Real quick?”
